Choosing a time : First of all, consider practicing astral projection early in the morning. This time of the day holds several key advantages to inducing an OOBE: you are already relaxed from a good night of sleep, there are less distractions and most importantly, the chemistry of the brain at this time of the day is naturally conducive to astral projection.
Basically, early in the morning (around 5 am), melatonin levels in the brain are relatively high. This helps you stay very relaxed. At the same time, cortisol levels begin to build up in anticipation of the day to come. This creates a stimulating energy that may be used to remain alert through the process of projecting the consciousness out of the body.
If you’re not a morning person, any other time than late at night should be advantageous. Most people try to astral project at night but only end up falling asleep because they are already too tired. If you are serious about astral projection, get into the habit of going to bed early so you can wake up early.
A good setup : Next, create an environment that you are fond of and in which you feel comfortable. The bedroom is perfect for this type of activity. It already is a room dedicated to sleeping, resting, intimacy and dreaming. Unplug the phone and other devices susceptible to create distractions, obviously.
Mental and emotional hygiene : It is important that your mind be as carefree as possible. A busy and worrying mind will be too focused on external matters to let go and allow out of body experiences to occur. Staying up to date with daily tasks, clearing up misunderstandings with others and living according to one’s means, for example, will all contribute to create good mental and emotional conditions to relax and focus on astral projection when you want to. Stress diminishes your chances of consciously astral projecting.
I also find it is easier to experience astral travel and lucid dreaming during periods where I am relatively less socially involved, don’t read the news and don’t watch tv (I got rid of it actually). This does not mean you have to become a recluse, I’m just pointing out that less involvement with the outer world can facilitate the process.
Be clear about your desires and motivations. Astral projection is an amazing state to find yourself into but without a firm desire to consciously experience it, you may not get very far. Desire is a great source of energy – concentrate on it everyday to speed up the manifestation process. Read books about it, daydream about it, talk about it – make sure it floods your awareness. It does make a big difference.
Equally important is the determination to go through any fear you hold regarding the exploration of consciousness and out of body experiences. It is not so much that you should have no fear at all when you start but rather be willing to continue on your adventure in spite of it. The sensations out of body experiences produce can be quite startling at first but don’t let that discourage or stop you!
Part 2: Relaxation
Self-initiated astral projection begins with deep relaxation and a calm mind
If you are practicing astral travel early in the morning as you come out of sleep, then you should already be in a fairly tranquil state. However, you will still need to further relax so the body can fall asleep again while your mind stays awake. This is called the hypnagogic state.
Relaxation and brainwaves : Relaxation may be better understood by taking a look at the various categories of brainwaves that manifest during our various activities (see tables below).
Gamma (38-90 Hz) : High awareness, strong perceptions, lucid dreaming
Beta (12-38 Hz) : Usual problem-solving, waking, everyday state
Theta (4-8 Hz) : Deep relaxation and meditation, dreaming, out of body experiences
Delta (0.5-4 Hz) : Very slow brain activity, deep sleep, regenerative state
Lambda/Epsilon (less than 0.5 Hz and higher than 100 Hz) : Multidimensional awareness, mystical consciousness.
Most people spend the majority of their waking hours in a beta (12-38 Hz) state of mind. To experience astral projection consciously, you need to lower the speed of brainwave frequencies to theta (4-8 Hz). You may achieve this by deeply relaxing your body and mind.
As you lay down and prepare to astral project, breathe slowly but effortlessly. Make your intention clear in your mind: you are there to experience astral projection. Accept that the process will take whatever time it will – otherwise it will create tensions in your being. It may happen quickly, it may not – and it shouldn’t matter. Astral projection is not so much something you control as something you allow to happen (at least at first!)
Brainwave entrainment to the rescue : One important tool that will help beginners to consciously manifest theta frequencies in the brain is brainwave entrainment. These are audio recordings of tones and pulses playing at various frequencies. By listening to these recordings, the brainwaves synchronize themselves with the frequencies of the sounds. This effectively brings about altered states of consciousness. A brainwave entrainment recording designed for astral projection will play theta sound frequencies.
The process of deep relaxation is simplified and quickened with brainwave entrainment. You only need to listen to the recording at the beginning of your astral projection practice to go into the required altered state of consciousness. It is a simple process of allowing the sounds to do their job. Scientific research has shown that brainwave entrainment brings about frequency changes in less than ten minutes.
Without using brainwave entrainment, some people, with practice, will naturally reach the theta state in about 30-45 minutes. Using brainwave entrainment will directly bring the brain into this state and remove any confusion concerning what needs to be done to get there.
Using visualisations and affirmations in this part of the process may be helpful to keep the mind from wandering. You may also pay attention to your sensations all the while and focus on this aspect of the process as it unfolds.
Going Theta: Two Different Types Of Brainwave Entrainment
Binaural Beats / They are the most well known and most popular form of brainwave entrainment. They consist of audio recordings that synchronizes your brainwaves with specific frequencies. They work by sending two different sound frequencies to each ears (through headphones). This influences the brain to generate a third frequency that matches the difference between the two sound signals.
If you have a 200 Hz signal sent to one ear and a 205 Hz signal sent to the other, the brain will begin to produce 5 Hz frequencies. An astral projection binaural beats recording will have your brain generate theta frequencies (4-8 Hz). This effortlessly puts the listener into an altered state of consciousness very conducive to out of body experiences. These sounds basically take care of everything until you are ready to perform the exit technique and leave the body.
Isochronic Tones / They are a more advanced form of brainwave entrainment than binaural beats and do not require headphones as they produce a single tone that is relayed to the brain through the ears.
Sleep paralysis : As your state of relaxation deepens, you will reach the hypnagogic state. This means your body is literally asleep while your mind is still awake. On your way to this state, your body should gradually feel heavier until the sensation of it will begin to disappear. You may experience sleep paralysis. This is a natural function of the body that prevents it from acting out dream activity while you sleep every night. It is safe and necessary to allow the paralysis to take hold.
Your senses will go equally numb and loose clarity. Hearing and vision will dim, touch will becomes less sharp. Imagery akin to dreaming may occur in your mind’s eyes – allow it to happen but try not to get involved with it as you may enter the dream state (which is not the same thing as the out of body state).
Reducing your magnetic pull : As you reach this part of the process, you should be thinking as little as possible. Too much mental energy will keep you tied to the body. You know how thinking can keep you awake when you try to go to sleep at night? It has the same effect here. We’re trying to remain lucid and conscious but not awake in the conventional sense of the term. The body needs to be sleeping.
Buzzing noises : As they get close to the point where separation occurs, many people (if not most) report buzzing sounds. This is completely normal and should not be interpreted as something negative. The buzzing can get quite intense, according to some, but I have never experienced buzzing to that extent. This may be because the transition out of the body usually occurs too quickly for the buzzing to intensify in my case.
Part 4: Separation
No need to put too much importance on exit techniques
When you no longer feel your physical body and your sensation of yourself seems to be more energetic than physical, it is time to project the consciousness outside of the body.
A word about exit techniques : There are countless exit techniques that can be used. Personally, I feel this aspect to be of lesser importance. When I reach this point, it just seems obvious what I need to do. After a few times, we learn how to manipulate energy and initiate inner actions that project us away from the physical body intuitively. It may well take a few times to learn this through trial and error but it’s all part of the process.
Exit techniques, if felt necessary, could be simply trying to roll out of your body, pulling yourself up on a rope or any other action that would have you move away from the body. This needs to be done when your awareness of your energetic body is strong, otherwise you will just end up moving your physical body and break your trance state.
There really is nothing more to it than that. What is more challenging is getting to this point where you feel your energetic body more so than your physical one and remaining in the out of body state once you initially project.
The moment of separation : …is typically quite amazing! It may feel like your whole self shivers or vibrates intensely. It is startling and beginners often react by disengaging themselves from the process. Then we need to try again… but hey, we learn from it and no harm is done. For me, when I project, it often feels like a vacuum is sucking me out of my body. It is a rather exciting sensation. Then I find myself floating around and ready to explore.
Part 5: Exploration
Consciousness is the only true vehicle
The astral dimension is a plane interweaved with the physical one. In fact, pretty much all mystical knowledge along with quantum physics say that there is no real separation in all of reality. The separation is only due to an existential state of being we find ourselves into and this conditions our perceptions. It is our perceptions that create our experience of reality.
Manifesting thoughts : Once out of body, you should perceive more and/or different phenomena than what the 5 senses are usually able to identify. It is a state where your beliefs are highly potent to manifest whatever you hold within yourself. This is because you are now interacting with an environment much less dense and more immediately responsive than the physical one. There is much wonder and mystery to this state and the discoveries you can make are indeed limitless.
A tip from Carlos Castaneda : The big challenge as soon as you find yourself out of the body is to focus and stabilize your presence in this state. It takes practice to be able to maneuver yourself around with precision. Carlso Casteneda used this technique to stabilize himself: he would get into the habit of immediately raising his out of body hands and look at them until they came into perfect focus. This action allowed his consciousness to stabilize itself in the astral state by narrowing his focus. This kind of technique can be used whenever you feel your focus to be diminishing or drifting.
Unpleasant encounters? Not all encounters may be pleasant, but simply remember that you are safe, that you have power and that your energy will hold its integrity if faced with questionable phenomena. This being said, I have never experienced anything seriously dangerous during out of body experiences or other non-physical states. The balance has been overwhelmingly positive. Simply call upon beneficial energy if you feel threatened. In any case, when something frightening occurs, you are most likely to instantly come back to your body and wake up.
Do not spend a second worrying about not being able to come back to your body. This happens naturally and automatically. It will be much more challenging to remain out of the body than to come back to it. The bond between your physical body and your consciousness is extremely strong.
Enjoying the mystery : I make no claim to be able to dissect the astral plane and tell you exactly what it is and all that it involves. What I can tell you is that I revel in bathing in it and every time I come back from it I feel invigorated and my sense of purpose is replenished. I don’t care very much about all the pseudo gurus who claim to have a map of the astral world. Even if it were true, I am still much more motivated to investigate things for myself.
In closing, I feel it appropriate to quote Joseph Campbell, the mythology scholar, who said that “Life is a mystery to be lived, not a problem to be solved” and this, I feel, applies itself very well to astral projection.
About me
Hi! I’m Jeff. The first times I experienced astral projection – some years ago as a child – it really did shape my perspective of life. Finding myself existing apart from my physical body was amazing enough… but being able to interact differently with the reality I knew (going through walls, for example) and being able to interact with aspects of reality I fantasized about but did not know existed for sure (other beings, parallel dimensions) was quite something else!

this has happened to me for years i cannot control it but would like to be able to i feel myself leaving my body and can actually see myself beneath me i am drawn to the window but am to frightened to leave incase i cant return i have known what is in peoples houses although i have never been inside i have left my own house on rare occasions but am really frightened it happened last night i was really afraid please help
It is difficult to gain control over a situation when we are fearful. You mention it’s been happening for years (out of body experiences) yet you have always come back to your body. I find that it does not matter how ‘far’ I am from the physical body, if something happens that make me fearful or uncomfortable, I will instantly come back to it (without even trying).
Perhaps you could start by simply staying in the room where you are. Concentrate on the intention to not move around so much when you find yourself out of body and instead try to stabilize your presence there. Use your hands or some other object to focus on. Gradually, you will feel more calm and not so out of control. Little by little, you can widen your exploration but start with simply remaining in this state and getting comfortable in it.
For one thing, it makes me aware that reality is wider and much more magnificent than the materialistic perspective we have of it in the West. It is not merely an intellectual knowledge that it gives me but an experiential one. I do not simply believe that I am first and foremost consciousness, I know it, I experience it. So it has very much an existential impact to experience astral projection. This has repercussions in daily waking life in that I find myself more inspired and open to different experiences. It also makes much less sense to go along with some of the rigid conventions of society. I know several people who have experienced it will agree, it makes us less afraid of death because the experience suggest that there is an independent reality from the physical one and that there is a continuity.
Aside from all this, OOBEs are just plain fun. They beat any video game or amusement park many times over!
I had a dream, while on cruise, that I saw a blonde woman joging in sandals. She was dressed in white and had a towel hanging from her left side that was partly white. The next day I saw a blonde woman on the jogging track, (though she was walking), in shower clogs, (flip flops). She wore a white top with blue shorts and had a sweater around her waiste. After a while the sleave of the sweater dropped on her left side, it was black and white striped. Was this a projection?
Hi Ray, sounds like you touched upon some kind of premonition. It has been well demonstrated by quantum physics that time does not really exist and it is our neurological makeup that makes us perceive time as linear and function within its context. It is therefore possible for us to ‘get’ information outside of linear time and dreams are one of the ways to tap into events that are happening in the past or future.
The physics of time aside, what you describe sounds like a dream. An OOBE is generally very distinct from the dream state in that it involves the actual projection of your consciousness outside of the physical body. There are some very vivid sensations involved with the projection experience and one good way to know if you were projecting was whether you felt yourself coming out of your body or back to it.
When you project, you can interact with the immediate physical environment or, depending on your state of consciousness, within other dimensions altogether. Sometimes it can be confusing because you can also initiate an out of body experience while you are dreaming.
Ok, this may sound crazy, but the first Astral Projection happens to me when I was Five, and its always the same thing, am always seeing my self flying around the house and it feels amazing and so true, that making me wondering if this is a dream or real thing happenning to me. but i always new that thismore than a dream please advice
Hi Nazar. I think you should trust yourself when you say that more than a dream was involved. Astral projection can feel much more vivid than regular dreams but then, dreams can be quite vivid as well. Out of body experiences occur spontaneously for many people, including children. If they are not discouraged or ridiculed, many children will talk about experiencing astral projection or other non-physical phenomena (though they may not describe these experiences in those terms).
Do you have any memory about coming out of your body or coming back to it when you have those flying experiences? Are those experiences accompanied by vibrational sensations as you go through space and perhaps through objects as you fly around? Those would be hints that it can be an OOBE. In general, I think we just know we’ve had an OOBE because the sensations are usually distinctive from those that occur in the dream state.
Hi Jeff
I enjoyed reading what you had to write – I stumbled onto this site because I am learning more about astral projection. I know I have experienced what you have written, so it’s comforting to know that I’m not out of my mind, as some would like to believe. At the same time this has been confusing to me mostly because I am a Christian, and this isn’t something we are suppose to be doing (supposedly). Although I don’t see anything wrong with it, nor is there anything in the Bible that says not to, so who knows, all I know when I have experienced it the few times in my life (I’m 44), I came away from it feeling refreshed and as though I was on cloud 9 (if that makes any sense).
I struggle with letting go of guilty feelings; like I am doing some type of dis-service to God if I play around in the spiritual realm.
Anyway, thanks for posting this.
Patti
I find that the astral dimension is quite responsive to beliefs. If you believe that it is wrong to be experiencing astral projection, then surely this will hamper or influence what happens when you are out of body or even make a difference in your ability to project at all. There is no other way than for you to decide for yourself whether this is wrong or not. Personally, I don’t have a problem with it, I see it as a well-intentioned exploration of consciousness. Thank you for sharing your comment!
They’re just different areas of consciousness, if that make sense. A lucid dream is a vivid type of dream where you become aware that you are dreaming. You are still within the dream environment. Astral projection, in a sense, is a bit more ‘real’ in that you are actually out of your physical body and can interact within the physical environment and other dimensions as well. Sometimes, the line between a lucid dream and an out of body experience can be not so obvious. As I experience them, the sensations are different and an out of body experience will feel more vibrational and more intense (in terms of sensations) than a lucid dream.
jeff, you said that you cant be harmed while in your astral state, but a friend of mine has encountered a demon while in her astral state and was beaten up pretty badly, also, hes chain was cut…if you can would you please e-mail me
Hi Justin. I don’t think I’ve said that no harm can occur during out of body experiences. What I’ve said is that it is rather rare and there is basically nothing to fear – unless the person is afraid of these types of experiences to begin with (in which case it might be a better idea to not engage such experiences because the fearful state of the person will manifest the demons or other scary phenomena).
It is just the same as in daily life, we attract/manifest what we hold as belief. Our perceptions create our experiences of reality.
Hi Jeff, I really enjoyed reading this. Anyways, what you described about the vacuum sensation completely describes me! I have been feeling this sensation for years. It all started when I had fallen into a deep depression when I was 15, and I never understood what it was. But I fought it every time because I was afraid.
Well, a few nights ago, it happened. I have been trying to allow it for quite some time (after reading about OOBE) but it finally happened. At first I thought it was a dream but everything you described hits home! First my body turned over on its own, my mind was awake, and I was aware that my body was asleep. Then I felt heavy and stiff, I tried to spread out my arms and the next thing I knew I flew up to the ceiling and turned over facing down towards my body. It scared me I wont lie. I said a fast prayer to God and my spirit guide and the shock pulled me back and I woke up confused lol.
I am very excited about this and I want to try again. Any tips on how to talk to my spirit guide? I feel its time we met! Thank you for all the wonderful descriptions already and any advice is much appreciated!
Hi Kitty! Sounds like you are aligning yourself for a very nice exploration! To interact with spirit guides, simply focus on your intention to do so. There is no complicated formula. Spend some time before attempting to astral project or before going to sleep (when spontaneous out of body experiences or special dreams can occur) thinking about your spirit guide. Keep it light, don’t push, just make your desire as clear and genuine as possible. In consciousness, intention and desire are the types of energy that propel experiences.
These beneficial energies might make themselves known to you in a myriad of ways, so you have to pay attention and learn to decipher the signs. This being said, they may also appear in very obvious forms. I had a being appear right in my face once, it was quite impressive and left little up to interpretation Enjoy the exploration!
I am not aware whether this is possible or not. Perhaps what was meant is that several spontaneous out of body experiences occur when one experiences near-death experiences (?) I’ve never heard of anyone dying while out of body though I suppose it could be possible.
hey jeff… there’s something different happening to me… i can’t control myself when i’m out in my physical body… could it be posible to see others while your exploring?
Hi Emmyrraijin. Controlling oneself while out of body is the most challenging part. It requires a lot pf practice.
Yes, it is possible to see others while you’re out of body though these people won’t necessarily belong to the physical world that we know, it depends in what dimension you end up projecting your consciousness.
Hey Jeff! I enjoyed reading this very much! I started trying to AP a while ago, when I was about 17 yrs old. My cousin and I got on the topic and so we researched on how to induce it and practiced it a couple times. I was trying to AP in a Lazy Boy and after about 45 min of just relaxing, my whole body started to tingle. Like when your arm falls asleep and circulation just starts to go through and you feel that tingle sensation. I was wondering if that’s a normal occurrence when inducing AP.
Anyways, when that happened I started to get excited, of course, and broke the trance. Ever since then I really never tried. Until about a month ago I’ve been pretty persistent in trying. I always seem to just fall asleep though, because I try right before I go to bed. I’m going to try out the waking up at 5AM and trying it to see if I have positive results.
I also recently started to get into Lucid Dreaming. As a child I used to have lucid dreams ALL the time until about age 15. It would be just so easy to figure it out, then I’d bite my lower lip and I wouldn’t feel pain and I knew I dreaming. My other question is can you AP through Lucid Dreams? Say I figured out that I was dreaming then closed my eyes and imagined that I was in my bedroom where I was sleeping, then layed down on my body and try to separate. Would something like that work? It seems like lucid dreams and APing are very similar, just that lucid dreams are your own “spiritual realm” that you created. Anyways, thanks for listening to my bable and I look forward to your response!
Oh! And do you know if there are any groups out there for people to go to who are interested in APing? I also read somewhere that people that astral project can actually assist you in astral projection by APing to your house and pulling you out when your in a relaxed state. Is this true?
The tingling sensation is normal. Many many people have reported similar sensations.
Yes, it is quite possible to induce an OOBE from a lucid dream. Actually, several of my out of body experiences occurred spontaneously while I was dreaming. If you are having a lucid dream then you can initiate the OOBE consciously from there. Simply relax your dream self, reduce your focus so as to minimize distractions and concentrate on your intention to astral project. You may want to include a destination or specific target point in your concentration so as to help direct the experience. So, concentrate and allow the experience to unfold. It’s true that it can be hard to distinguish between lucid dreams and OOBEs. In the greater scheme of things, it matters little but you can pay attention to the sensations that occur while you are having those experiences and with time and practice you will get first hand knowledge about the different areas of consciousness involved.
Keep us posted if you have success with the early morning projections!
hi jeff, i loved reading this. i attempted to try and project myself last night…i think that i was close. i was concentrating on my breathing, and i started to mfeel lighter…but when i had the feeling that it was time to roll out of my body,i ended up actually rolling off of my bed and nocking myself out on my night stand, hehe almost didnt wake up for school. can you tell me what went wrong?
Hi Batto! ah! Yeah this happens a lot. It’s probably one of the most common ‘mistakes’ we can make. Essentially, you were not in enough of a relaxed state and you were still too connected to the physical body. Did you go through the hypnagogic state as described above? You might want to try binaural beats or other brainwave entrainment recordings to help you further deepen the trance state. Needless to say, moving too quickly just result in the physical body moving and thus breaking the trance state. Good luck!
Hello Jeff! Since I’m a Christian would this be against God? In the Bible it says not to communicate with the occult but u can do this during astral travel correct? And is talking to my spirit guide a type of witchcraft? I really feel like I NEED to astral project so that I can spiritually mature. And if God doesn’t initiate the astral projection then can demons hurt u? And is any other type of psychic power such as telekinesis in the physical world a sin? Please HELP ME I’m so confused. Thanks sooo much. =]
Hi Samantha! This is all a matter of perception and belief. To me, this is not against God nor does it constitute a type of witchcraft. It’s all very acceptable and normal. But if in your perception it is against God, then you have to either respect your perception and abstain to explore this type of experience (which could well be shaped by your beliefs and turn out to be unpleasant) or re-evaluate the reasons you have for considering this to go against God.
Part of the problem could be that if you rely on an exterior authority to determine whether this is good or evil then you are not in a position to decide for yourself whether it is an acceptable avenue of exploration…

I had a being appear right in my face once, it was quite impressive and left little up to interpretation
Enjoy the exploration!
Hey Jeff i was wondering, Is this deadly because i did it once and when i googled it it says you could die in the process… is this true ?
Thanks again!
Hi Justin!
Jeff
hi jeff, i loved reading this. i attempted to try and project myself last night…i think that i was close. i was concentrating on my breathing, and i started to mfeel lighter…but when i had the feeling that it was time to roll out of my body,i ended up actually rolling off of my bed and nocking myself out on my night stand, hehe almost didnt wake up for school. can you tell me what went wrong?
Hi Batto!
